Great point, Pam! People love stories, and they're critical to relationship-building, whether between people or between people and organizations.

I think even beyond stories, though, when engaging with donors and volunteers on social media you must get to know them and engage with them around their interests, not just be a megaphone. Find conversations that are already happening and chime in, in an authentic and non-salesy way.

If it sounds like a lot of work, it is. A social CRM tool can help make this process easier, but it does require the work of somebody who's passionate about and invested in an organization's mission and can articulate it in a conversational way.

Great take on the communications to donors. It's one of my favorite fights with both Development and the Executive Directors who want to keep things "businesslike" and whose charm almost never comes through their written communications. Businesslike, of course, isn't why people contribute their time or money to a nonprofit. Thanks for reminding us that it's the people - always.

Absolutely Sandra, especially these days. John Haydon had a great post awhile back about the Chase Giving contest that really resonated with me.

So many lessons here! Nonprofits should also be concerned about the corporations they align themselves with. All the money in the world is not worth breaking ethical boundaries.

As far as writing goes, even if someone else writes your copy, it has to sound like the person signing the letter. You have to work as a team always keeping your goals in mind - to raise money and develop relationships with supporters all along the journey.

Interesting Leena - I did not know that (and heartily concur; Smithfield has horrific practices).

I've been contemplating a blog posting on that very topic.

Is Paula Deen still a spokesperson for Smithfield? If so, I think those of us in the nonprofit world need to include in our discusssion of marketing tactics and take a step back from marketing from time to time, to discuss whom we endorse and support and what it says about us:

Pam:

This is another fantastic post. In your usual style -- charming and to the point -- you walk nonprofits through what drives effective marketing.

Thanks for sharing these tips. I am going to forward it to my clients.

Now, I have to go. It's lunchtime here in Chicago and all this talk of Paula Deen has me craving southern fried chicken.

Thanks.

Great post Pam.
I'm a huge Food Network fan as well and constantly find lessons learned there. Keep up the good work, I smiled my way through your post thinking of how effect Paula Dean grant writing would be and what a wonderful fundraising copywriter she would be as well.
As always, great ideas from you.
