Hi Roger,

You make an important point--all the great tools in the world won't help if you don't have what you need to communicate your message in a way that can be heard.

One the other hand, a great message with no distribution channel isn't especially helpful either. Like so many things, balance is required.

On-line communication tools are neither magical money machines nor evil robot overlords. Treating them like anything other than tools is a great way to end up on a bad path.

You are right, these are just tools. They need to be used correctly and should not totally replace other relationship building methods.

If the communication is not done well, the automated communication can be perceived as just that... an impersonal, lazy form of communication that will drive people in the opposite direction you desire. I see more poorly written communication than good. Selecting the tools to use is just the beginning. Users also need to focus more on writing good content to turn those prospects into donors.
